| The intent of FABLE is edu-tainment. The definition of ‘fable’ is ‘a fictitious story meant to teach a moral lesson.’ This fable deals with particularly profound human issues. Therefore, its delivery method is as light and diverting as possible. Toward that end, this fable is presented in musical theater form, with colorful costuming and frequent changes of fantastic characters, in the manner of Candide, Pippin, and Peer Gynt.. At the same time, in order to make this fable as accessible to producers and performers as to audiences, FABLE has been designed with minimal production and casting, and instrumentalist requirements. The set contains only two major structures: the cottage, and the rock. The rest can be created by tabs, low flats and/or plantings, and flies. Lighting and aerosol effects can be as elaborate as theater can conjure, but lighting can also be simple and misting and fogging non-existent. Particularly if FABLE is offered professionally, the cast requirements are six men and six women by means of doubling, trebling, and even quadrupling of parts. Six performers should be good dancers. Likewise, the orchestra is limited to eight and could with resourcefulness be reduced to as few as five. Acting and dancing demands are not intrinsically great; singing ranges are limited; nor are virtuoso demands placed on the instrumental players. The didactic nature of the piece and its structure argue well for high-school production. The inclusion of many characters allow numerous actors to participate. However, as this is an intimate production, the cast should not exceed twenty-four (twice the minimal requirement). Nor should the orchestra expand with doublings beyond twelve. It is best if FABLE is performed in a theater of not more than 1,000 seats. If the proscenium span is too wide and/or high, it should be boxed in with borders. |
